Each of the thirty-six deities in this deck carries its own story. Some lived in harmony; others fought. The names of the victors ring out loudly, while the names of the defeated have been quietly hidden away. Japanese mythology is also a history of victors and vanquished — that is how I see it. I have placed both, without distinction, into every single card.
The goddess drawn on the package is Kukurihime, who reconciled Izanagi and Izanami. In her I felt a power to gently draw everything — conflict and reconciliation alike — to a close. Three, six, and nine: thirty-six deities carrying the prayer of Miroku, and Kukurihime who binds them together.
I made this as an oracle through which you can learn the myths and go to meet the gods at their shrines. I hope it becomes a doorway — to your own roots, to the ties that bind you, and to the great unseen presence around us. If you can feel, even a little, that great something that cannot be seen yet surely exists, then the path to human happiness is not as steep as we imagine. It is in that belief that I create my work.
